Are you a photo addict? Don’t be. Here’s why.

picture love

As we have inculcated the habit of making a to-do list for everything, even the minutest thing in our mind, so that we don’t need to remember, likewise we have sort of gotten into the habit of trying to capture each and every moment of our lives.

We feel that when and if we will need to have a look at the past and relive the past, we can just have a look at the pictures and it’s done.

But does this really happen?

I guess not.

We click more photos than we can actually handle.

We click so many pictures, that except for satisfaction of having a lot of pictures, there is no purpose left.

Rather than doing the tedious task of sorting the photos and deleting the unwanted ones, we just transfer them in our external devices (maybe laptop or hard drive or cloud).

When we try to look at the pictures later on, it seems monotonous at times. Mostly the photos are in similar poses and at similar points.

Why we click so many photos?

  • The easiness to take pictures. All you need is a phone.
  • To share on social media. The purpose of taking photos now is not remembering the special events, but it has become a way of communicating with the world; where you are, how you feel, etc. Instead of relishing a dish at the restaurant, you are busy taking its picture and posting it on social media.
  • The person who doesn’t take photos is considered unusual and not cool.
  • We feel that it’s enjoyable to take pictures all the time, but we don’t realise the harm that it is doing to us.

Why should we limit our photos?

  • When we click pictures, our attention gets diverted and we don’t appreciate the beauty of the place, moment and time.
  • Losing the special bond with our loved ones. We no more share our experiences; highs and lows, and special photos with our loved ones; as we share everything instantly on social media with the whole world.
  • Limiting our photos and selective clicking of photos relieve us from some sort of unknown burden of clicking them. It is more beneficial also, as it gives you time to look around and have fun; and later on, enjoy the special moments captured.
  • Taking too many photos impairs the ability to remember what you see. We must keep our brain active enough to remember the golden moments of our lives.
  • Of course, photos avoid fading out of our memories, but excess of it has a detrimental impact on us. We will be able to recall only to the extent we see in pictures. Also, the emotions, feelings can’t be captured.
  • Negative impact on children.
  • When we try to capture our kid’s childhood in photos, the actual happiness is hampered and your child also learns only this way of remembering important events of his childhood. For example: The feeling when your child takes his first step can’t just be captured in a photograph, it is a memory to be cherished for the lifetime.
  • When you make the child conscious all the time by taking his pictures, he will become too much worried about his looks all the time. Self-admiration, self-criticism will become part of his life at a very early stage of life, which of course isn’t a good sign.
  • The concept of selfie is the most unfavourable of all. Too many selfies lead to obsession about oneself. The use of filters is the icing on the cake. The person becomes so addicted to look good all the time that it might lead to damage his personality.
  • Too much of sharing photos on social media is dangerous also. Not only friends and family, but numerous other people see your pics, which might not be a good thing for you.
  • People might get tired of looking at your pics and may not be interested anymore to know about you and your whereabouts.
  • Photographing all the time may be a sign of mental illness.

If we look at the larger picture, clicking so many pictures is a waste of time and energy. Don’t be a photo addict, chill and enjoy life.
